Technical strategy needs a business horizon

Architecture becomes strategy when its tradeoffs are tied to the company the team intends to become.

A technical plan can be internally elegant and still be wrong for the business. The relevant question is not whether a platform can scale indefinitely, but which constraints the company is likely to face next and when they become material.

The CTO creates clarity by connecting technical options to business horizons: the next customer segment, the next reliability promise, the next regulatory obligation and the next stage of team growth.

A peer circle for the same role is useful precisely because its members understand both layers. They can challenge the architecture and the timing without flattening the conversation into cost alone.
